Dental Crowns in San Antonio, TX

Our teeth experience a lot of wear and tear. Though at times, the crown of your tooth may suffer damage, the tooth’s roots under the gumline remain in good condition. The tooth can be saved in such situations, and you may be suitable for a dental crown. At Shepherd Dental PC, we offer safe and effective treatment, providing our patients with dental crowns that appear and feel as natural as possible.

What Is a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns help shield the top of your tooth when the enamel wears down or becomes defective. Crowns help restore a tooth’s shape or length when dental bondings or fillings are insufficient to keep the tooth intact.

We offer various types of crowns, but the most standard ones are porcelain crowns. These crowns look very much like your natural teeth and blend effortlessly with the rest of your teeth. No one will be able to spot the crown so you can chew, talk, and smile without embarrassment.

Who Would Need a Dental Crown?

Patients with excessive tooth decay that a filling cannot repair, fractured fillings, cracked teeth, and teeth treated for root canals often need a dental crown. These teeth have suffered trauma only to their surface structure, while they are in good health underneath the gum line.

How Can You Receive a Dental Crown?

At the first appointment, we will prepare the tooth to secure the crown. This may include removing decay or reshaping the tooth to make sure it is healthy before fixing a cap on it. We also must make sure it is shaped in such a way that the crown fits comfortably. After the tooth is appropriately prepared, we will take impressions of your mouth and send them to our lab for its fabrication. The dental crown will be matched to the color and shape of your other teeth.

We will attach a temporary cap to your tooth until your permanent restoration is ready. This gives you practical use of your tooth, but at the same time, you should exercise restraint when eating hard or sticky foods.

When the crown is ready, we will clean the tooth during the subsequent appointment and perform any final preparations, including filing the tooth down, if necessary. After the permanent crown is placed, it is checked if it fits well. Once we are sure of the fit, we will permanently attach the crown to the tooth, giving you a fully functional tooth once again.
